Managing the Classroom in the Digital Age: Challenges and Solution Suggestions

Abstract

The digitalization of education has complicated classroom management processes, making it necessary for teachers to develop new strategies. The primary objective of this research is to explore the evolving roles of teachers, the classroom management challenges they encounter, and the strategy they employ to address these issues holistically within the context of classroom dynamics that have undergone transformation with digitalization. The study employed phenomenological research design. The study group consisted of 32 teachers, selected through the maximum variation sampling method, during the 2023–2024 academic year. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The findings revealed that teachers encounter multilayered problems in classroom management caused by psychological, social, and physical factors due to the impact of the digital age. They have developed strategies such as maintaining motivation, applying disciplinary measures, and fostering communication and collaboration to cope with these problems. In addition, teachers made suggestions for effective classroom management, such as simplifying curricula, improving their digital competencies, and strengthening the technological infrastructure of schools. The participants also stated that they adopted a holistic approach that provides a more systemic perspective against the variability created by digitalization in the classroom. In this respect, the study goes beyond the limited perspective frequently emphasized in the existing literature, which focuses on digital competence, and addresses multilayered dimensions such as changing student behaviors, teacher–student interaction, in-class communication, and school–family collaboration. It also offers original, thematic, and practice-based contributions to classroom management processes through the views of teachers.

Dijital Çağda Sınıfı Yönetmek: Karşılaşılan Zorluklar ve Çözüm Önerileri

Abstract

Eğitimde dijitalleşme, sınıf yönetimi süreçlerini karmaşıklaştırarak öğretmenlerin yeni stratejiler geliştirmesini zorunlu hale getirmiştir. Bu araştırmanın temel amacı, dijitalleşmeyle birlikte dönüşen sınıf dinamikleri bağlamında öğretmenlerin değişen rollerini, karşılaştıkları sınıf yönetimi sorunlarını ve bu sorunlara geliştirdikleri stratejileri bütüncül bir yaklaşımla ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma, fenomenoloji çalışması deseninde yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, 2023-2024 eğitim-öğretim yılında, maksimum çeşitlilik örnekleme yöntemiyle belirlenen 32 öğretmenden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla toplanmış ve veriler tematik içerik analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular, öğretmenlerin dijital çağın etkisiyle sınıf yönetiminde psikolojik, sosyal ve fiziksel kaynaklı çok katmanlı sorunlarla karşılaştıklarını; bu sorunlara karşı motivasyon sağlama, yaptırım uygulama ve iletişim–iş birliği stratejileri geliştirdiklerini ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca öğretmenler, etkili sınıf yönetimi için öğretim programlarının sadeleştirilmesi, dijital yeterliklerinin artırılması ve okulların teknolojik altyapısının güçlendirilmesi yönünde önerilerde bulunmuştur. Katılımcıların büyük bölümü, dijitalleşmenin yarattığı sınıf içi değişkenliklere karşı daha çok sistemsel bir bakış açısı sunan bütünsel yaklaşımı benimsediklerini ifade etmiştir. Bu yönüyle çalışma, mevcut literatürde sıkça vurgulanan teknoloji kullanım yeterliği odaklı sınırlı bakış açısının ötesine geçerek; dijital çağın etkisiyle farklılaşan öğrenci davranışları, öğretmen-öğrenci etkileşimi, sınıf içi iletişim ve okul-aile iş birliği gibi çok katmanlı boyutları da kapsamlı şekilde ele almakta, öğretmen görüşleri aracılığıyla sınıf yönetimi süreçlerine dair tematik ve uygulama temelli özgün katkılar sunmaktadır.
