The role of tall buildings in urban climate temperature changes: İzmir city center research

Abstract

As the organization of the built environment began to take form, the building-environment relationship emerged as a critical subject of inquiry within the architectural discipline. Findings from such investigations have traditionally informed the design and construction process, particularly in areas such as structural system decisions, façade material selection, and the integration of artificial systems to ensure environmental comfort. In the contemporary context, however, the shifting dynamics of the global climate have reoriented this line of research toward a more climate-responsive framework, foregrounding environmental parameters as central to architectural discourse and practice. In connection with global climate change, significant disruptions in climatic conditions are increasingly being observed. Among these disruptions within the urban climate, temperature fluctuations constitute the most prominent impact. In the existing literature, heat variations induced by buildings are examined either at the scale of individual structures or across the urban fabric. These studies demonstrate a direct correlation between the massing of buildings and temperature variation. Given their large volumes and distinct formal characteristics, high-rise buildings must be acknowledged as contributors to urban heat dynamics. While isolated high-rise structures may have a limited influence on climatic data, the concentration of such buildings within specific urban zones can generate lasting effects on urban temperature patterns. This study interrogates the extent to which the massing configurations of high-rise buildings influence temperature variations within the urban climate. The methodology of this study is structured in two phases. In the first phase, temperature data were recorded over the course of one year within a series of constructed high-rise buildings. Subsequently, mass models of these buildings were subjected to digital solar simulations. The findings derived from both stages were cross-referenced and analyzed comparatively.
