Abstract

This research aims to reveal the character of literacy transformed by education in recent Ottoman history, referencing the magazine " The Illustrated School World." In the modernization process, the change in press life and education-training policies have included contemporary ideas and methods for producing and disseminating information. The social, economic, and intellectual differentiations that increased their speed and power in the 19th century created new symbolic forms of thinking and communication in the developed countries of the period and attracted the Ottoman State to this process. One of the places where the identification, integration, renewal, and creation opportunities of this process, which strengthens the quality and quantity of literacy with print capitalism, can be easily observed in the Ottoman tradition is education-themed journals. The Illustrated School World was a magazine published between July 23, 1913, and April 23, 1914. It had 14 issues and was directed by Mustafa Figani. The magazine had an average of 20 pages per issue. It covered various topics such as family education, physical education, applied education, geography education, visual arts education, village education, preschool education, and health education. The magazine also featured stories, memoirs, political, scientific, and women-themed texts. The magazine also draws attention with its intense visual use. Hunting, nature, science, map, animal, education, and landscape in the Illustrated School World There are 267 silhouette, caricature, and portrait images. The magazine came to life with the contributions of "Şemsülmekatip" and "Darülmuallimin," which were critical private schools of the period Abdullah Cevdet, Ahmet Nuri, Ahmet Robenson, Berham Lütfü Mahmut Kenan, Mehmet Celal, Mehmet Said, Muallim Bahaddin, Muallim Ismail Hakki Mustafa Figani, Orhan Nithat, such as the authors opened their numbers.Theoretical approaches to education, what should be done in education, examples of women's education, efforts to popularize knowledge, and things to be considered in terms of health can be followed in the articles in the journal. In this qualitative research, which uses document analysis with the survey model, the focus is on the formal and intellectual character of the journal by using purposeful sampling. After the formal analysis, including all issues of the journal, was carried out, the Ottoman articles selected were transcribed with a purposeful sample. The data obtained after transcription were examined in the contexts of education, women, health, and positivist knowledge. The assessment of "The Illustrated School World" reveals that it was centred around various themes such as education, science, nature, literature, health, women, and more. The magazine advocated for literacy based on reason and science; however, in the context of the foreign policy of the time, it had the potential to shift toward militarism. The content and visuals of the magazine reflect a rise in nationalist, positivist, and militarist perspectives that utilized universal and local cultural themes and narratives.
