This pilot study was conducted to evaluate the effect of intermodel expressive art therapy applied to intensive care nurses on the nurses' compassion fatigue and self-compassion levels, and was carried out as a single-group, pretest-posttest designed intervention study. The study was conducted at a university hospital in Ankara between February and December 2022. The sample of the study consisted of eight intensive care nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Intermodel art therapy was applied to intensive care nurses once a week. The therapy consisted of seven sessions in total and each session lasted an average of 90 minutes. All sessions were held online.
The data of the study were collected with the "Nurse Introductory Information Form", "Compassion Fatigue Scale" and "Self-Compassion Scale". Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test were used to evaluate the data. Ethical approval, institutional permission and informed consent were obtained from the participants to conduct the study.
After the therapy, it was determined that the post-test mean scores of the participants' Self-Compassion Scale were statistically significantly higher than the pre-test mean scores (p <0.05). It was determined that the post-test mean scores of the participants on the Compassion Fatigue Scale and the sub-dimensions of the scale were statistically significantly lower than the pre-test mean scores (p <0.05). In line with the promising results of this pilot study, it is recommended to conduct randomized controlled studies evaluating the effect of intermodel expressive art therapy on compassion fatigue and self-compassion in nurses.
