Sociology of Everyday Life: Social Memory and Memories

This article examines how social memory is shaped within everyday life and how collective memories are transmitted across generations. Social memory is constructed through the rituals, symbols, and social practices of daily life. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes the intergenerational transmission and continuity of this memory. The findings reveal that symbols and rituals play a central role in meaning-making processes in everyday life and contribute to the construction of collective identity. Additionally, the study highlights the function of social memory in strengthening solidarity and social bonds. The preservation and transmission of social memory to future generations hold significant importance, particularly in ensuring the continuity of cultural rituals and reinforcing social consciousness. This study offers key insights into the preservation and sustainability of social memory, emphasizing its role in shaping the social structure from a sociological perspective. In this context, the “Ritualistic Collective Memory Theory” (R-CMT) has been proposed. This theory argues that social memory is not merely the transfer of information between individuals but is sustained through dynamic processes involving daily rituals, symbols, and collective practices. Everyday rituals and symbolic actions function as mechanisms that preserve and transmit social memory across generations. This process is crucial for societies in reproducing their identities and ensuring cultural continuity.
