Background: It is very difficult to define an optimal method of feeding premature infants. For this reason, an alternative feeding method to breastfeeding was used.
Method: The study was conducted as an observational prospective study with 75 mothers of premature babies receiving treatment and care in NICU. Mothers were given injector nutrition education. Data on the feeding method and weight of the baby during and after discharge were obtained through telephone interviews with the mothers.
Results: 68.0% of the mothers had experienced breastfeeding before, 77.3% stated that their baby was well fed with the injector. 52.0% of their babies are 30-32. gestational age, 74.6% postnatal 1-5. peroral feeding was started.. A statistically significant difference was found between feeding methods, weight gain on the 7th day after discharge (p=0.018).
Conclusion: The way of birth of mothers affects the feeding method of their babies. Mothers prefer to feed with the injector method on the 0th day. Premature babies with a gestational age of 36 weeks and above can take the milk or formula given by the injector method better. Mothers receiving kangaroo care may prefer injector feeding method.
