A Systematic Review of Postgraduate Studies on Accreditation in Higher Education

Accreditation functions as a formal quality assurance mechanism that confirms the competence and integrity of educational institutions
and programs. Amidst the ongoing extension and diversification of higher education, the necessity for objective external evaluation has
become paramount. Consequently, a systematic review of the literature on accreditation processes has become essential for revealing the
evolution of the concept in higher education and for spotting continual challenges and areas requiring development. This study, therefore,
provides a thorough analysis of the scholarly landscape by systematically examining postgraduate theses and dissertations focused on
accreditation in education. Employing a qualitative, descriptive research design, the study utilizes document analysis as its primary data
collection tool. The research corpus comprises 50 postgraduate studies on educational accreditation, conducted between 1994 and 2024
and sourced from the publicly accessible National Thesis Centre. The identification and selection of these studies were conducted in
adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The analysis depicts a
descriptive synthesis of the designated works, detailing their distribution across universities, institutes, and departments, and categorizing
them by research method, model, data collection instruments, and sampling strategies. Finally, the study identifies and discusses significant
trends within this body of research and offers recommendations for future scholarly investigation.
