Determination of Sleep Quality and Fall Risk in Elderly People Residens in A Nursing Home

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 15 Sayı: 2, 294 - 300, 31.08.2025

Öz

The aim of this study is to determine the sleep quality and fall risk of elderly individuals staying in a nursing home. This is a descriptive
study. The research data were collected in a nursing home between March and May 2019. The collection of research data was conducted via face-to-face interview method using a personal information form, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Morse Falls Scale. The
study sample consisted of 94 elderly individuals. The sleep quality of elderly individuals staying in nursing homes was found to be good
and the risk of falls was found to be low. There was no significant relationship between age and scale scores and between PSQI and morse
falls scale. PSQI and morse falls scale scores did not differ according to sociodemographic data. The risk of falls was found to be higher in
those who used more than two medications and sleep quality was found to be better in those who used sleeping pills compared to nonusers(
p<0.05). Sleeping during the day, comfort of pillow or mattress, noise and presence of roommates did not affect the PSQI score
(p>0.05). In a study, elderly individuals who slept in a room without light and had no pre-sleep habits were found to have higher PSQI
scores compared to others (p < 0.05). To improve sleep quality in older adults, it is important to assess their need for sleep medication and
ensure a dark sleeping environment. Although the fall risk among elderly people in the nursing home was found to be low in this study, it
is recommended that those taking more than two medications be evaluated as high-risk.
