The Mark of the Birth of the Ancient Egyptian State: The Narmer Palette and What It Tells

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 17 Sayı: 2, 365 - 390, 10.05.2025

Öz

The Narmer Palette was unearthed at Nekhen in Middle Egypt. The palette depicts a king and a struggle to ensure the unity of his country. Scientists read the name of this king depicted on his palette as "Nar-mer" and accordingly named the work "Narmer Palette". Narmer manages to continue as the founding leader who brought Ancient Egypt under one roof. It is also stated that Menes, who was reported as the first pharaoh of Egypt by Manetho, who lived in the 3rd century BC, is the same person as Narmer. It can be seen that there are many descriptions and various explanations regarding the palette. A powerful king who defeats his enemies is in the foreground. In addition, the king's close men and the Egyptian gods named Horus and Hathor were placed at the most strategic points of the palette. On the other hand, it is understood from some of the depictions on the palette that the Egyptians and Sumerians had very close relations in ancient times.
