Abstract
Iraq-i Arab was the scene of the wars the Ottoman and the Safavids fought in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Baghdad, the capital of the region, switched hands several times in 1638 it definitively fell to the Ottomans. Iraq-i Arab was among the territories conquered as part of Shah Isma'il's initial wave of territorial conquests and continued to be a bone of contention until it finally and definitively fell to the Ottomans in 1638. Iraq-i 'Arab was no ordinary territory for the Safavids. As the site of the martyrdom and burial of a number of Shi'i Imams, it occupied an extraordinary place in the Twelver Shi'i imagination. Iraq was important for the Safavids. They did, after all, devote resources to the upkeep and embellishment of its Shi'i shrines and were even willing to spend money on these symbolic sites when They no longer controlled them. The reign of Shah Sultan Husayn, Safavids saw little change in the Safavid reluctance to march on Iraq. This is hardly surprising given the shah's well-know diffidence and the lamentable state of the Safavid army at the time. Unlike most of his predecessors, Shah Sultan Husayn actively encouraged the pilgrimage to the 'atabat, so that during his reign Iranian pilgrims visited the holy sites. This paper will test the iconic status of Iraq-i Arab for Shi'i Islam against historical reality by examining the zeal and energy applied by the Safavids to gain and maintain control over Iraq-i Arab and the justification for their engagement with the region.
