Evaluation of Nutritional Status in Patients with Cirrhosis
Öz
Background: Nutritional deficiencies are common in patients with cirrhosis; there is no standard test to assess nutritional status in patients with cirrhosis. This study investigated the prevalence of malnutrition in patients with cirrhosis and examined the association of malnutrition with ascites, Child-Pugh classification, and model of end stage liver disease (MELD) score.
Materials and Methods: Nutritional status in cirrhosis was assessed using the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), the Royal Free Hospital Nutritional Prioritizing Tool (RFH-NPT), and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) prospectively.
Results: Of 80 cirrhotic patients, 46 were male (57.5%), and the mean age was 54.40±11.77 years (range: 18-75). In the control group, 44 of 80 were male (55%), and the mean age was 53.85±9.59 years (range: 18-75). Compared with controls according to SGA, RFH-NPT and MNA tests, malnutrition prevalence was significantly higher in cirrhotic patients than in controls (p<0.001, p<0.001, and p<0.003, respectively). No correlation was found between malnutrition risk and MELD score, Child-Pugh score, or the presence of ascites in the patient group.
Conclusion: Malnutrition is frequent in patients with cirrhosis. All cirrhotic patients should be screened for malnutrition, irrespective of ascites, Child-Pugh class, or MELD score.
