HYPERTENSION KNOWLEDGE LEVEL AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE RECEIVING HEALTH EDUCATION

Öz

Hypertension remains a significant public health issue worldwide, and the knowledge and awareness levels of young people who will become the healthcare professionals of the future play a critical role in preventing and effectively managing the disease. The aim of this study is to determine the level of knowledge of students studying in the field of health regarding hypertension. The descriptive cross-sectional study study was conducted between 13 and 17 May 2024 with 500 students enrolled in health programmes at a university. The ‘‘Socio-demographic Information Form’’ and ‘‘Hypertension Knowledge-Level Scale’’ developed by the researchers were used to collect research data. The data obtained from the study were analysed using the Jamovi 2.3.28 statistical programme. In the study, the average hypertension knowledge score of the students was found to be 14.10±4.10. Blood pressure was measured as a systolic average of 119±11.9 mmHg and a diastolic average of 70±8.4 mmHg. It was determined that men had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure than women (p<0.05). A significant relationship was found between knowledge levels regarding medical treatment for hypertension and gender, diet type, and daily salt consumption. It has been determined that the majority of university students have hypertension risk factors and that their blood pressure is affected by gender, body mass index, exercise routine, and diet type (p<0.05). In conclusion, students' knowledge of hypertension differed according to certain variables (age, gender, diet type, exercise, etc.) in terms of total and subscale scores. It is recommended that education programs be developed to increase the awareness of students receiving health education regarding hypertension risk factors.
