This study examines the professional practice and intellectual trajectory of Rifat Chadirji, one of the key figures of modern Iraqi architecture. Its aim is to assess Chadirji’s intellectual identity as shaped both by his architectural production and by his contributions to architectural theory, and thereby to render his position within the history of modern Iraqi architecture more visible. Adopting a qualitative, historically grounded reading, the article discusses Chadirji’s architectural approach in relation to his education, the impact of Western modernism, his intellectual milieu, and his engagement with context-specific local elements in Iraq. While his early works display clear influences of the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier, from the 1960s onwards he is seen to develop a regional modernist language in which local materials, climatic responsiveness, and symbolic forms come to the fore. His work in photography, theory, and publishing further positions him as a multifaceted contributor to architectural discourse. As both an agent and a historian of modern Iraqi architecture, Chadirji occupies a pivotal role. Accordingly, this study argues that his architectural approach must be interpreted not only in formal terms, but also through its socio-political, cultural, and historical dimensions.
