“Beyaz Fil”: A missing object in the history of modern architecture in Türkiye

Öz

This article reconsiders Beyaz Fil, designed as a commercial building [işhanı] in Manisa in 1959, through the question of its visibility within the history of modern architecture in Türkiye. The problem addressed is not the absence of scholarship on local manifestations of modern architecture, but the fragmentation of knowledge about the building across architectural discourse, institutional archives, project drawings, everyday use, naming practices, oral memory, and its present condition. The study therefore distinguishes among historiographical, archival, and epistemic gaps, locating its methodological focus in the difficulty of reconciling heterogeneous forms of evidence within a single coherent narrative. Drawing on Barad’s concept of diffraction, it reads different regimes of evidence through one another in order to render visible the discrepancies, relations, and transformations that emerge between them. Seven operative fields of inquiry, together with a series of diagrammatic tools, trace how Beyaz Fil’s institutional, material, urban, and mnemonic forms of visibility are produced and reconfigured across different temporalities. While the chronological scaffold distinguishes documented events from only partially traceable periods, the diagrams make visible both the question-generating logic of the research and the intersections among its analytical fields. Rather than simply incorporating Beyaz Fil into the canonical narratives of architectural history, the study ultimately proposes a situated, polyphonic, and relational historiographical experiment in how an architectural object becomes historically knowable.
