Comparison of Knowledge Levels and Misconceptions of Science and Social Studies Prospective Teachers About Atmospheric Environmental Problems

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine and compare the knowledge and misconceptions of science and social studies prospective teachers about atmospheric environmental problems. In this study, field scanning method from the methods of descriptive research was used and it was conducted with prospective science and social studies teachers. The sample of the study was designed by 441 prospective teachers studying in faculties of education in 2017-2018 academic years. It was taken in consideration to have taken environmental courses at the undergraduate level in determination of participants in the sample selection by using easily accessible and the criterion sampling. In the study, Atmospheric Based Environmental Problems Diagnosis Test (ABEPDT) was used as data collection tool. ABEPDT is a three-stage test consisting of 13 questions. In the first stage, multiple choice questions, in the second stage, the rationale of the answers given in the first stage and in the third stage, the question of whether or not to be sure of the answers were questioned. The data obtained from the prospective teachers were evaluated considering the rubric developed by the researchers. It was utilized of SPSS.20 package program in data analysis. At the end of the study, it was found that science and social science prospective teachers had similar misconceptions, while misconceptions were more intense in social science prospective teachers. When the knowledge levels of science and social studies prospective teachers about atmospheric environmental problems were compared, it was determined that Science prospective teachers were more successful.
