Foreign Trade Structure of Dairy Industry of Eastern Africa: The Case Study of Uganda

Abstract

Uganda is one of the major producer and exporter of milk and dairy products in Eastern Africa. Dairy industry plays an important economic and nutrition role in the lives of many people in Uganda. Dairy sector is an important part of Uganda’s national economy. It makes a significant contribution to the economy in terms of investment, employment and export. Now, total milk production is about 1,207 thousand tons and export value is 40 million US dollars. The aim of this study is to determine of competitive power of Uganda’s dairy sector. In this study used Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Trade Balance Index (TBI). In study used time series data for the period from 2000 to 2014, and the data obtained from UN COMTRADE web site. According to research findings Uganda has a comparative advantage in dairy sector, and the competitive power of dairy sector is increasing in during period.
