To Be Autonomous or Not to Be: Teachers' Battle with Curricula

Öz

The purpose of this research is to elucidate the characteristics of curriculum autonomy among primary and middle school teaachers, the meanings ascribed to this autonomy, and the lived experiences of teachers regarding curricular independence. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study sought to provide an in-depth exploration of teachers' perceptions and experiences concerning curriculum autonomy. The phenomenological approach, a type of qualitative research design, was adopted for this investigation. The participants comprised five primary school teachers and twelve middle school teachers, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and content analysis was conducted to interpret the obtained data, with the findings presented in relation to emergent themes. The research findings indicate a strong desire among teachers to participate in the curriculum development process, suggesting the need for initiatives to foster opportunities for autonomy, developing curriculum literacy skills and enhance teacher motivation. Furthermore, while teachers exhibit a strong fidelty to the objectives and outcomes delineated in the curriculum, they demonstrate a significant degree of autonomy in terms of content selection, instructional methods, and assessment practices.
