The Adaptation of Mathematics Achievement Emotions Scale to Turkish Culture

Öz

This study aimed to adapt the Mathematics Achievement Emotions Scale, developed by Gómez et al. (2020), for use in Turkish culture and to examine its psychometric properties. The sample consisted of 302 vocational school students from western Türkiye. To establish construct validity, a series of analyses including Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were performed. The EFA results revealed several problematic items and indicated that the original four-factor structure was the most viable and interpretable solution. Based on these findings, a revised 33-item model was tested using CFA, which confirmed a good model fit for the four-factor structure (enthusiasm, enjoyment, boredom, and frustration). The reliability of the subscales was examined through internal consistency analysis, yielding high Cronbach's alpha coefficients: enthusiasm (α = .928), enjoyment (α = .921), boredom (α = .912), and frustration (α = .861). Item analysis further confirmed that all retained items contributed effectively to their respective subscale. The findings demonstrate that the adapted 33-item Turkish version of the scale is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring mathematics achievement emotions among vocational school students.
