Game-Based Learning in Second Language Education: A Bibliometric Trend Analysis (1985-2025)

Öz

This study examines how game-based learning research in second language education has evolved from 1985 to 2025. Using a systematic bibliometric approach, we analysed publication trends and thematic patterns in the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) database at two levels: general game-based learning and language-focused studies to identify specific characteristics. Data were organised into five chronological periods reflecting major technological and pedagogical shifts. Publications increased after 2010 and again in 2020–2025 (Figure 1). Language-focused research shows distinctive emphasis on motivational factors, consistent focus on vocabulary acquisition, earlier adoption of mobile platforms, and greater attention to communication and social interaction. The field has matured methodologically, progressing from proof-of-concept studies to rigorous comparative investigations. Game-based learning and gamification emerged as distinct approaches. However, gaps remain, including limited research on language skills beyond vocabulary, insufficient longitudinal studies, and understudied cross-cultural contexts. The pandemic represents a turning point, transforming game-based approaches from peripheral innovations to mainstream practices. These findings inform researchers, educators, and policy makers working to integrate gaming effectively in language education.
