THE EFFECT OF PRESS FREEDOM ON CORRUPTION: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS

Öz

Although corruption is common in underdeveloped and developing countries, it is also an important problem in developed countries. Although it is seen in different types in different countries, corruption with similar application patterns is less common in countries with press freedom, economic development, economic freedom and political stability. Corruption is an economic, political, legal and socio-cultural phenomenon. In this sense, the aim of the study is to test the effect of press freedom on corruption in underdeveloped, developing and developed countries separately and in all of these countries. In the study, panel ordered qualitative preference analysis was carried out for each country group and all countries using data from the 2010-2017 period. According to the results of the analysis,, it is concluded that press freedom is more effective at lower levels of corruption and is higher likely to effect the lower level of corruption in each country group and all countries.

Öz

Yolsuzluk azgelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerde yaygın olmasına rağmen gelişmiş ülkelerin de önemli bir sorunudur. Farklı ülkelerde farklı türlerde görülse de uygulama şekilleri benzerlik gösteren yolsuzluk basın özgürlüğü, insani gelişme, ekonomik özgürlük ve politik istikrarın olduğu ülkelerde daha az görülmektedir. Yolsuzluk ekonomik, politik, hukuki ve sosyo-kültürel belirleyicilere sahip bir olgudur. Bu anlamda çalışmanın amacı, azgelişmiş, gelişmekte olan, gelişmiş ülkelerde ayrı ayrı ve bu ülkelerin tümünde basın özgürlüğünün yolsuzluk üzerine etkisini test etmektir. Çalışmada her bir ülke grubu ve tüm ülkeler için 2010-2017 dönemine ait veriler kullanılarak panel sıralı nitel tercih analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Analiz sonucuna göre her bir ülke grubunda ve ülkelerin tamamında basın özgürlüğünün yolsuzluğun düşük düzeylerinde daha etkili ve düşük yolsuzluk düzeyini etkileme olasılığının daha yüksek olduğu sonucu elde edilmiştir.
