Invesigation of the Effect of University Students' Self-Control and Self-Esteem Perceptions on Social Problem Solving Skills

Öz

This study investigated the relationship between self-control, self-esteem, and social problem-solving skills among university students. A relational survey model, one of the quantitative research designs, was employed. The study involved 520 students from various faculties of Afyon Kocatepe University, selected through convenience sampling. The study assessed university students’ self-control, self-esteem, and social problem-solving skills using the Self-Control Scale (Kuzucu, Tunçer, & Aksu, 2015), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Çuhadaroğlu, 1986), and the Social Problem-Solving Inventory–Short Form (Çekici & Güçray, 2012), respectively. Pearson correlation analyses revealed significant positive relationships between both self-control and self-esteem with social problem-solving. Multiple regression analysis indicated that self-esteem significantly predicted social problem-solving skills, while self-control showed a complementary, albeit weaker, predictive effect. These findings suggested that students with higher self-esteem and self-control were better equipped to manage social challenges and interpersonal conflicts. Practically, interventions that aimed to enhance self-esteem and self-control could have contributed to more effective social problem-solving among university students. The study underscored the importance of fostering psychological resources to support students’ adaptive social behaviors, offering implications for educators, counselors, and policymakers focused on higher education and personal development.
