Evaluation of the Relationship of Hedonic Hunger with Body Image and Depression in Faculty of Health Sciences Students: The Case of a State University in Ağrı

Öz

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between hedonic hunger and body image and depression in Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University Faculty of Health Sciences students according to sex and body mass index (BMI). Material and Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University Faculty of Health Sciences students (n=713) during the 2023-2024 academic year. In addition to the general information questionnaire form, Power of Food Scale (PFS), Body Image Scale (BIS) and BECK Depression Scale (BDS) were used in the study. The PFS consists of food available, food present and food tasted; the BIS consists of the sub-dimensions of negative perception of the body, evaluation sensitivity, positive perception of the body and body change, and the BDS is evaluated on the total score. Results: Female students had significant higher food available (p=0.004), food present (p<0.001), food tasted (p=0.004), PFS mean (p<0.001) and evaluation sensitivity (p=0.046) scores than male students. The food available (p=0.001), PFS mean (p=0.022), body change (p<0.001) and total BIS (p=0.003) scores of overweight and obese students were statistically significant higher than those of underweight and normal weight students. Overweight and obese students' negative perception of the body (p=0.010) and positive perception of the body (p=0.026) scores are statistically significant higher than normal weight students. There is a weak positive correlation between food available score and negative perception of the body (r=0.182, p<0.001), evaluation sensitivity (r=0.144, p<0.001), body change (r=0.155, p<0.001), total BIS (r=0.165, p<0.001) and total BDI (r=0.140, p<0.001) scores. There is a weak positive correlation between food present score and evaluation sensitivity (r=0.174, p<0.001), body change (r=0.133, p<0.001), and BDS total (r=0.158, p<0.001) scores. There is a positive correlation between the food tasted score and evaluation sensitivity (r=0.207, p<0.001), body change (r=0.151, p<0.001) and total BDS (r=0.138, p<0.001) scores, and a weak negative correlation between the positive perception of the body score (r=-0.176, p<0.001). There is a weak positive correlation between the mean score of the PFS and the scores of negative perception of the body (r=0.143, p<0.001), evaluation sensitivity (r=0.206, p<0.001), body change (r=0.171, p<0.001), BIS total (r=0.145, p<0.001) and BDS total (r=0.175, p<0.001). There is a weak positive correlation between the BDS total score and the scores of negative perception of the body (r=0.317, p<0.001), evaluation sensitivity (r=0.300, p<0.001), positive perception of the body (r=0.134, p<0.001), body change (r=0.203, p<0.001) and BIS total (r=0.336, p<0.001). Conclusion: Our study results show that hedonic hunger is associated with depression, body image, BMI and sex in Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University Faculty of Health Sciences students.

Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi Öğrencilerinde Hedonik Açlığın Beden İmajı ve Depresyon ile İlişkisinin Değerlendirilmesi: Ağrı’da Bir Devlet Üniversitesi Örneği

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi öğrencilerinde hedonik açlığın beden imajı ve depresyon ile ilişkisini cinsiyet ve beden kütle indeksine (BKİ) göre değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı-kesitsel tipte olan bu çalışma 2023-2024 eğitim öğretim yılı içerisinde Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi öğrencileri (n=713) ile yapılmıştır. Çalışmada genel bilgiler anket formuna ek olarak Besin Gücü Ölçeği (BGÖ), Beden İmajı Ölçeği (BİÖ) ve BECK Depresyon Ölçeği (BDÖ) kullanılmıştır. Besin gücü ölçeği besin bulunabilirliği, besin mevcudiyeti ve besinin tadına bakılması; BİÖ bedeni olumsuz algılama, değerlendirme duyarlılığı, bedeni olumlu algılama ve bedeni değiştirme alt boyutlarından oluşurken BDÖ ise toplam puan üzerinden değerlendirilmektedir. Bulgular: Kadın öğrencilerin besin bulunabilirliği (p=0,004), besin mevcudiyeti (p<0,001), besinin tadına bakılması (p=0,004), BGÖ ortalaması (p<0,001) ve değerlendirme duyarlılığı (p=0,046) puanları erkek öğrencilerden istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksektir. Fazla kilolu ve obez öğrencilerin besin bulunabilirliği (p=0,001), BGÖ ortalama (p=0,022), bedeni değiştirme (p<0,001) ve BİÖ toplam (p=0,003) puanları zayıf ve normal kilolu öğrencilerden istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksektir. Fazla kilolu ve obez öğrencilerin bedeni olumsuz algılama (p=0,010) ve bedeni olumlu algılama (p=0,026) puanları normal kilolu öğrencilerden istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksektir. Besin bulunabilirliği puanı ile bedeni olumsuz algılama (r=0,182, p<0,001), değerlendirme duyarlılığı (r=0,144, p<0,001), bedeni değiştirme (r=0,155, p<0,001), BİÖ toplam (r=0,165, p<0,001) ve BDÖ toplam (r=0,140, p<0,001) puanları arasında pozitif yönde zayıf bir ilişki vardır. Besin mevcudiyeti puanı ile değerlendirme duyarlılığı (r=0,174, p<0,001), bedeni değiştirme (r=0,133, p<0,001) ve BDÖ toplam (r=0,158, p<0,001) puanları arasında pozitif yönde zayıf bir ilişki vardır. Besinin tadına bakılması puanı ile değerlendirme duyarlılığı (r=0,207, p<0,001), bedeni değiştirme (r=0,151, p<0,001) ve BDÖ toplam (r=0,138, p<0,001) puanları arasında pozitif, bedeni olumlu algılama puanı (r=-0,176, p<0,001) arasında ise negatif yönde zayıf bir ilişki vardır. BGÖ ortalama puanı ile bedeni olumsuz algılama (r=0,143, p<0,001), değerlendirme duyarlılığı (r=0,206, p<0,001), bedeni değiştirme (r=0,171, p<0,001), BİÖ toplam (r=0,145, p<0,001) ve BDÖ toplam (r=0,175, p<0,001) puanları arasında pozitif yönde zayıf bir ilişki vardır. BDÖ toplam puanı ile bedeni olumsuz algılama (r=0,317, p<0,001), değerlendirme duyarlılığı (r=0,300, p<0,001), bedeni olumlu algılama (r=0,134, p<0,001), bedeni değiştirme (r=0,203, p<0,001) ve BİÖ toplam (r=0,336, p<0,001) puanları arasında pozitif yönde zayıf bir ilişki vardır. Sonuç: Çalışma sonuçlarımız Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi öğrencilerinde hedonik açlığın depresyon, beden imajı, BKİ ve cinsiyet ile ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir.
