Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of cold application on joint position sense and maximum voluntary isometric muscle strength in the shoulder.

Material and Method: Forty-four young individuals aged 18-24 years were included in the uncontrolled study. For cold application, two cold gel packs were applied to the shoulder area for 20 minutes. Skin temperature was evaluated with the Mastercool infrared thermometer, and joint position sense was evaluated with the Cybex Humac Norm Isokinetic Test and Exercise System device. Muscle strength of the external and internal rotators was measured in 3 sets at 12-second intervals using the device, and the average torque was determined. Values before and after cold application were compared statistically.

Results: A significant difference was found in skin temperature (dominant; t=46.32; p<0.001; non-dominant; t=40.22; p<0.001) and dominant extremity internal rotation joint position sense (t=2.12; p=0.040) values before and after cold application. There was a significant difference in muscle strength of internal rotation (z=1.962 p=0.050) for the non-dominant shoulder. After the application, a significant relationship was found between skin temperature in the non-dominant extremity and maximum voluntary isometric muscle strength in external rotation (r=-0.583, p=0.001) and internal rotation (r=-0.581, p=0.001).

Conclusion: It was found that non-dominant extremity muscle strength and dominant extremity joint position sense decreased in shoulder internal rotation after cold application. These changes should be taken into consideration in exercise planning after cold application in the clinic.
