PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT: A STUDY FOR CONCEPTUAL AND SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

Parental involvement is defined through variables such as parents 'expectations and wishes, parental control and house rules, activities of child at home, parents' attitudes towards the school, communication with teachers, checking of homework, volunteering in class/school activities. Literature shows that involvement has significant benefits for the development and effectiveness of school as a whole, as well as for students, families and teachers. Despite the legal registrations to ensure participation and some projects carried out by the MNE in Turkey, the practices are far from reaching the desired level. The attitudes of parents, teachers and administrators is one of the most important factor determining how and which level they will involve or their wishes/expectations for parental involvement. Moreover, the first step in achieving the success and continuity of participation activities in a classroom or school is the positive attitude of all individuals involved in the process, However, literature states negative attitudes towards family participation rather than positive attitudes.

AİLE KATILIMI: BİR KAVRAMSAL VE DURUMSAL ANALİZ ÇALIŞMASI

Öz

Aile katılımı; anne baba beklentileri ve istekleri, anne baba denetimi ve ev kuralları, anne baba ve çocuk arasındaki iletişim, çocuğun evdeki faaliyetleri, anne babaların okula yönelik tutumları, öğretmenle kurulan iletişim, ödevlerin kontrol edilmesi, sınıf/okul faaliyetlerine katılma gibi değişkenler aracılığıyla tanımlanmaktadır. Araştırmalar, katılımın, öğrenci, aile ve öğretmenler ile ilgili olduğu kadar bütün olarak okulun gelişimi ve etkililiği ile ilgili de önemli yararları olduğunu göstermektedir. Türkiye’de katılımı sağlamaya yönelik yasal düzenlemelere ve MEB tarafından yürütülen kimi projelere karşın uygulamalar istenen düzeye ulaşmaktan uzaktır. Öğretmen, yönetici ve ana babaların, aile katılımına yönelik tutumları, onların ne düzeyde ve nasıl bir katılım göstereceklerini ya da gösterilmesini istediklerini/beklediklerini belirleyen önemli etmenlerden birisidir. Üstelik genel olarak bir sınıf ya da okuldaki katılım çalışmalarının başarısı ve sürekliliğini sağlamanın ilk basamağı, başta ana baba ve öğretmenler olmak üzere sürece dahil olan tüm bireylerin katılımla ilgili olumlu tutumlarının olmasıdır. Ancak araştırmalar, olumlu tutumlardan çok aile katılımına yönelik olumsuz tutumlardan bahsetmektedir.
