Synthetic oxytocin administered before labour is the most widely used medical intervention at birth in developed and developing countries. It is known that synthetic oxytocin administration before labour has a negative effect on breastfeeding. In the study, it was aimed to compare the results of breastfeeding in the early postpartum period and breastfeeding behaviors of babies who were and were not administered oxytocin induction in vaginal birth. The research was carried out in postpartum clinics of a hospital in Eskişehir. The sample of the study consisted of 100 mothers, 50 who were administered synthetic oxytocin at vaginal birth and 50 who did not. Personal information form, pregnancy and birth process evaluation form and breastfeeding evaluation form were used as data collection tools. While 80% of the mothers who were not administered oxytocin induction could breastfeed in the first half hour after birth, 56% of the mothers who received oxytocin induction were able to breastfeed in the first half hour (p =.018). The results of the study show that synthetic oxytocin administered at birth negatively affects early breastfeeding and primitive sucking reflexes of the newborn.

Oksitosin indüksiyonu uygulanmayan annelerin %80’i doğumdan sonra ilk yarım saatte emzirebilirken, oksitosin indüksiyonu alan annelerin %56’sı ilk yarım saatte emzirebilmiştir (p=.018). Çalışmanın sonuçları doğumda uygulanan sentetik oksitosinin, erken dönemde emzirmeyi ve yenidoğanın ilkel emme reflekslerini olumsuz etkilediğini göstermektedir.
