This study examines the transformation of individuals' greeting practices under the influence of digitalization and the role of emojis (digital symbols) in this process. Specifically, it explores the function of emojis in enhancing emotional expressions in interpersonal communication and reshaping social values. The primary aim of the research is to understand how traditional greeting practices have been restructured through digital symbols and how this change affects interpersonal sincerity, a sense of belonging, and the formation of social bonds. The study focuses not only on individual expressions but also on the transformation created by emojis in cultural norms and values.
The research is based on a survey conducted with 239 participants. Participants’ demographic characteristics were analyzed in the context of emoji usage frequency and functionality, examining the effects of age and education level on these patterns. Younger individuals were found to be more active on digital platforms and used emojis for greetings and emotional sharing, while older individuals displayed a more reserved approach toward emojis. Additionally, education level emerged as a determining factor in the critical and conscious use of emojis.
The findings reveal that emojis serve as a powerful tool in social contexts but play a limited role in formal communication. Rather than completely replacing traditional greeting practices, emojis add a new dimension to these rituals. While emojis demonstrate potential to support cultural inclusivity, the study emphasizes the need for technological developments to be balanced with ethical and social considerations to preserve human values and cultural heritage. This study provides a new perspective on the role of emojis in social, cultural, and emotional communication, highlighting the necessity for broader research in the future.
