Sınıfta Siber Aylaklık: BESYO Öğrencileri ile Niteliksel Bir Çalışma

Öz

Siber aylaklık, öğrencinin ders sırasında bir teknolojik araç ile sosyal medya kullanımı vb. içerikleri dolaşarak dersi dinlememe davranışı olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Siber aylaklığın akademik ortamlarda siber yükselişi ve ders sırasında akıllı telefonların ve internet bağlantılarının akademik olmayan amaçlarla kullanımı üniversite bağlamında bir endişe kaynağı olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, eğitim ortamlarında özellikle de sporla iç içe olan üniversitelerin Beden Eğitimi ve Spor Yüksekokullarında (BESYO) öğrencilerinin siber aylaklık konusundaki deneyimlerini ve bakış açılarını araştırmayı ve tanımlamayı amaçlamıştır. Çalışma grubunu, 2024-2025 eğitim-öğretim yılında BESYO bölümlerinde öğrenim gören 15 erkek ve 15 kadından oluşan 30 üniversite öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma, nitel verilerin kullanıldığı görüşme ve gözlem içerikli bir yöntem ile desenlenmiştir. Bu kapsamda çalışma BESYO öğrencilerinin gözünden siber aylaklık yapma nedenlerini ortaya koymayı amaçlayan bir durum çalışması niteliğindedir. Nitel veriler ise açık uçlu bir soru ile toplanmıştır. Veriler toplanırken çalışmanın amacından katılımcılar haberdar edilmiş ve katılımcıların toplanan verilerin isimsiz ve gizli olarak tutulacağından emin olmaları sağlanmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonucunda siber aylaklığa neden olan faktörler “7 tema” altında toplanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular sonucunda BESYO öğrencilerinim hepsi farklı dönem ve derslerde “siber aylaklık” yaptıklarını kabul etmiştir ancak bu durumun kabul edilebilir bir durum olmadıklarını belirtmişlerdir. Araştırma sonuçları, ders saatlerinde sosyal medya kullanımının alışkanlık haline geldiğini, genellikle internet bağımlılığı ve can sıkıntısından kaynaklanan yaygın bir oyun oynama eğilimi olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Bu nedenle dersi veren öğretim elemanı/üyesinin “siber aylaklık yapmaktan vazgeçirmek” ya da en aza indirmek için önlemler alması gerekmektedir.

Cyberloafing in the Classroom: A Qualitative Study with SPES Students

Öz

Cyberloafing is defined as students’ disengagement from class by browsing social media and similar content on a technological device during instruction. The growing prevalence of cyberloafing in academic settings—especially the non-academic use of smartphones and internet connections during lectures—has become a concern in universities. This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences and perspectives of students in Schools of Physical Education and Sport (SPES) regarding cyberloafing in educational environments. The study group comprised 30 undergraduate students (15 women, 15 men) enrolled in SPES programs in the 2024–2025 academic year. The research was designed as a qualitative case study using interviews and classroom observations to reveal, from the students’ viewpoint, the reasons for cyberloafing. Data were collected with one open-ended question in the course setting after informing participants about the study and assuring anonymity and confidentiality. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Factors leading to cyberloafing were grouped under seven themes. All participants acknowledged engaging in cyberloafing in different semesters and courses, yet stated that such behavior is not acceptable. The findings indicate that using social media during class has become habitual and that there is a common tendency to play games, typically stemming from internet addiction and boredom. Accordingly, instructors are advised to implement measures to discourage or minimize cyberloafing.
