Animated Character Analysis and Costume Design with Structured Analysis

Öz

In various genres, costumes complement fictional characters and not only constitute the external appearance of the fictional character, but are also used for purposes of fun or style by fans who dress up as the character and internalize that character’s state of mind. This phenomenon is called cosplay.

A literature review of the field has revealed no study made previously on the cosplay costume design process according to character analysis. The present study emphasizes the link between animated characters and cosplay work and focuses on literature review, character analysis and the development of costume design according to this analysis. The main aim of the present study is to create an example for the development of a cosplay collection focusing on the chosen character.

In this study, the structured analysis method, usually applied to fairytales, will be used in the analysis of animated films. The first stage of the study is the structured analysis of the 2012 Pixar Studios animated film Brave and its main character Merida according to Vladimir Propp’s theory as outlined in his Morphology of the Tale. In the second stage, the applied research method will be used. In light of the data obtained through the analysis in the first stage, costumes will be designed for the animated character Merida. The development of costume design is limited to the pre-production stages in the model adapted from Frings’s costume design process: script analysis, research, determining costume themes, sketching, sketch evaluation, choosing designs and determining fabric and colors.
