Hedonic Hunger, Intuitive Eating, and Physical Activity: A Study on Young Adults

Öz

Young adulthood is a period when individuals go through important developmental processes in terms of physical, psychological and social aspects. While hedonic hunger defines foods eaten in search of emotional satisfaction, intuitive eating shapes individuals' eating behaviors based on their internal hunger signals. Physical activity is thought to be an important factor that can affect the food preferences of individuals in this period. In this context, the aim of the study was to examine the relationship between hedonic hunger, intuitive eating and physical activity status in young adult individuals. The study was conducted using the relational screening model. The study group comprised of 402 individuals (M=19.02) selected by convenience sampling method and aged between 18-29. The personal information form prepared by the researchers, the “Food Power Scale”, “Intuitive Eating Scale” and the “International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Form (IPAQ-SF)” were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data, t-test for independent samples was used using the SPSS 24.0 package program and Pearson Correlation analyses were used to determine the relationship between the variables. Effect sizes and assumption checks were also considered to strengthen interpretability (Cohen’s d, η²). When the findings obtained from the study were examined, no significant difference was determined between the total score and sub-dimensions of the food power scale and the intuitive eating scale sub-dimension score averages in the t-test results conducted according to the gender variable (p>0.05). It was determined that there were significant relationships between the participants' BMI, total scores and sub-dimensions of the food power scale, and the intuitive eating scale sub-dimension scores (p<0.05). On the other hand, it was understood that there were no significant relationships between the physical activity status and the total scores and sub-dimensions of the food power scale, and the intuitive eating scale sub-dimension scores (p<0.05). As a result, it is shown that there are significant relationships between BMI and food power perception and intuitive eating behaviors. In line with this information, it is considered important to provide seminars and trainings on this subject so that young adults can have healthy eating behaviors.
