Evaluation Of The High School Entrance Exam (HSEE) Preparation Process

Abstract

In this study, the HSEE preparation process has been comprehensively evaluated in the context of Supporting and Training Courses (STC), government-issued books and supplementary resource books, student coaching system and level classes. As the research is a qualitative study, it has been structured according to the phenomenology pattern. The study group of the research was determined according to the criterion sampling method, and the study group consists of 10 teachers working in a secondary school in East Black Sea Region. A semi-structured interview form consisting of open-ended questions developed by the researchers was used to collect the data. Content analysis method was used in the analysis of the research data. The analyzed data and findings were structured under 9 themes, 57 categories and 484 codes. The results of the research are that LGS causes stress and anxiety on students and parents, it is important for the life and future of students, the studies carried out in schools, especially STCs, are beneficial in the preparation process for HSEE, the textbooks given by the state are not sufficient for preparation for HSEE and supplementary books are needed, a level class is required during the exam preparation process, student coaching is beneficial, the competencies of school administrators and teachers and family attitudes affect success, and school success affects teachers, students and parents positively. In the context of the results obtained in the study, free auxiliary resources are delivered to students in the week the schools are opened, student coaching trainings are given to teachers, emphasis is placed on family training, school administrators and teachers are supported and developed professionally, reducing the number of schools accepting students by examination and some prerequisites must be met in order to enter the selection exam. It can be recommended to implement a system of transition to secondary education based on guidance.
