Bibliometric Analysis in Cinema and Aesthetics: Trends, Actors, and Future Directions

This study examined the development of academic publications in the field of cinema and aesthetics between 2014-2024 by bibliometric analysis method. The findings show that academic interest in this field is steadily increasing, but international collaborations are limited and individual studies stand out. The annual publication growth rate of 7.43% indicates that the subject continues to attract academic attention, but it is not on a rapid rise. The average number of citations per document is 1,86, indicating that the academic impact of the studies remains at a certain level. Since 2019, a significant increase has been observed in the number of publications. This increase is thought to be linked to the impact of digitalization, artificial intelligence and new media theories on cinematic aesthetics. The increase in the number of publications during the pandemic process in 2020 can be explained by the rise of studies on cinema and digital platforms. However, the slight decline in the number of articles in 2024 suggests that academic interest may have partially declined. The decrease in the number of citations, on the other hand, shows that the impact of studies in the field decreases over time or the interest in new studies is more limited. The country-by-country analysis revealed that the United States and the United Kingdom are at the forefront of cinema research. Although the U.S. has the largest number of articles, the U.K. stands out in the total number of citations. The fact that some countries, such as the Netherlands, reach a high number of citations with a small number of articles shows that the studies in these countries are effective. Keyword analysis shows that studies in the field of cinema and aesthetics are spread over a wide range and have an interdisciplinary nature.
