Abstract
Armenians,
with whom have lived in Anatolia and Istanbul, the same geographical area for
hundreds of years, is a society which
have many common cultural elements with Turks. When the history of
Armenians is studied, it is seen that Armenian’s relations with Turks date back
to more than a thousand year. Armenians, especially during Ottoman period,
lived as an important and effective non-muslim element. In this period and
afterwards, Istanbul was the city where Armenians densely lived. Armenian
community of Istanbul, is one of the most populous non-muslim community of Turkey. “Birth, marriage and death”, are the
most important stages of human life, was first analyzed in detail by French
ethnologist Arnold Van Gennep in his work “Les Rites de Passage” which was
published in 1908. This work has a revolutionary character in terms of
examining transition periods more systematically and scientifically. Under the
leadership of Gennep’s work, transition period theme has begun to be studied in
ethnology researches in many parts of the world. In this study, Istanbul
Armenian’s after birth rituals are discussed, which is one of the phases of
transition period. By the help of the negotiations that are performed basing on
the method of field research, it is obviously seen that interactions that go
back on a long way between Armenians and Turks also reflected on transition
period, and common customs and practices of both cultures come out. The overall
objective of the study is to identify after birth ritua cultural and folkloric
characteristics of Armenians, those living in Istanbul from past to present.
According to studies there is a general assessment about these Armenian
rituels.
