Historical Development of the Armenian Alphabet in the Triangle of Language, Religion and Identity
Abstract
For Armenians,
language and religion are of prime importance in the formation of identity. The
formation of the Armenian alphabet by a cleric named Mesrop Mashdots in the 5th
century, A.D. is considered an important process for the formation of the Armenian
identity. There are different views on the formation of the Armenian alphabet.
The researches on this issue continue with arguments as to whether the Armenian
alphabet is original or a copy of an earlier one. Although the Armenians and
researchers outside Armenia have done a lot of research on the issue, they have
not reached a consensus yet. However, the Armenian alphabet has survived with
little changes since it was formed. In this study, the studies on the origin of
the Armenian alphabet will be examined on the basis of the alphabet’s effect on
language, religion and identity.
