Pre-Service Teachers’ Entrepreneurship Characteristics and Views of Career Stress

Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the relationship between pre-service teachers’ entrepreneurship characteristics and career stress in relation to different variables. In addition, it also aims to investigate the relationship between pre-service teachers’ entrepreneurship characteristics and career stress. The current study employed the relational survey model and causal comparative model. The participants of the study are 354 senior students from the departments of elementary school teacher training, pre-school teacher training, Turkish, social studies teaching, German, English, science, elementary school mathematics, arts, music, computer and instructional technologies, psychological counselling and guidance. As the data collection tools, the “Entrepreneurship Scale” developed by Deveci and Çepni (2015) and the “Career Stress Scale” developed by Choi et al. (2011) and adapted to Turkish by Özden and Sertel-Berk, (2017) were used. In the analysis of the collected data, frequencies, percentages, Mann Whitney U test and correlation analysis were used. As a result, the female pre-service teachers’ entrepreneurship mean score was found to be higher than that of the male pre-service teachers in the sub-dimension of emotional intelligence. The entrepreneurship characteristics of the pre-service teachers having work experience were found to be better than those of the pre-service teachers not having work experience in the sub-dimension of risk taking. The entrepreneurship mean scores of the pre-service teachers having taken a course/seminar on entrepreneurship were found to be higher than those of the pre-service teachers not having taken a course/seminar in the sub-dimensions of risk taking, self-confidence, emotional intelligence and being innovative. The male pre-service teachers’ career stress was found to be higher than that of the male pre-service teachers in the sub-dimensions of career ambiguity and lacking information, external conflict. The career stress of the pre-service teachers was found to be not varying significantly depending on work experience in the sub-dimensions of career ambiguity and lacking information, external conflict and employment pressure. The career stress of the pre-service teachers having taken a course/seminar on entrepreneurship was found to be higher than that of the pre-service teachers not having taken a course/seminar in the sub-dimensions of career ambiguity and lacking learning and employment pressure. A weak, negative and significant correlation was found between the pre-service teachers’ entrepreneurship characteristics and career stress.
