In
the last two centuries, the fundamental changes that have occurred in the management
of states and especially what the citizen typing would become as a result of
the changing child perception in the West have been an issue of concern for the
individual, society and the whole world in the global aspect. Citizenship studies,
which used to be dealt with on a narrow axis of culture and geography in the
past, are shifting from national citizenship to global and digital citizenship under
the influence of mass media. The individual is basically expected to adopt
her/his own culture and also to respect the differences and fulfil the duties
and responsibilities that are expected of her/him as a human being and as a citizen.
This study was carried out to perform the discourse analysis of the
‘Father-Son’ text, which was published in the eighth
and the ninth issues of Etfal Journal concerning what kind of individuals and
citizens children should be in 1875, using the socratic interview method. As a
result of the discourse analysis, it was found that the ideal individual was subjected
to education through human and religious values, whereas the ideal citizen was shaped
according to the interests of the nation without any interpersonal otherization
and the idea of peace was grounded on a global perspective. In this context, it
is necessary to increase historical studies for the citizenship education in
multivariate societies.
