Can Humility Be Measured? Difficulties Faced in the Conceptualization and Measurement of Humility

Öz

Although humility is an important virtue that has been emphasized by
religious and philosophical traditions for centuries, the beginning of
empirical interest in this virtue has been accompanied by a positive psychology
approach. However, scientific researches dealing with humility have faced some
difficulties. The first of these problems is the problem of conceptualizing
humility. Due to a number of factors, the definitions of humility have varied
from one study to another. However, recent studies have focused on three main
components of humility: “Accurate self-appraisal, modesty, and
other-orientedness. The second difficulty faced in humility studies is the
measurement problem. In the field of measurement, humility has a structure that
is not easily subject to self-report measurement methods, by its nature. Adding
to this the variable definitions of the structure, a valid and reliable
measurement tool that can measure humility has not been developed in a long
time. Due to a number of difficulties faced in developing a valid self-report
scale that measures humility, the researchers have developed alternative and
innovative approaches against self-report scales to assess this difficult
structure.

Alçakgönüllülük Ölçülebilir mi? Alçakgönüllülüğün Kavramsallaştırılması ve Ölçülmesinde Karşılaşılan Güçlükler

Öz

Alçakgönüllülük
yüzyıllardır dini ve felsefi gelenekler tarafından üzerinde durulan önemli bir
erdem olsa da bu erdeme yönelik ampirik ilginin başlangıcı pozitif psikoloji
yaklaşımıyla birlikte olmuştur. Ancak alçakgönüllülüğü ele alan bilimsel
araştırmalar bazı güçlüklerle karşılaşmışlardır. Bunlardan ilki
alçakgönüllülüğün kavramsallaştırılması problemidir. Bir takım faktörlerden
ötürü alçakgönüllülük tanımları bir çalışmadan diğerine değişkenlik
göstermiştir. Ancak yakın zamanda gerçekleştirilen çalışmalar alçakgönüllülüğün
“benliğin tam bir şekilde
değerlendirilmesi, sadelik ve kişilerarası yönelimlilik” olmak üzere üç temel
bileşeni üzerinde durmaktadır. Alçakgönüllülük araştırmalarında karşılaşılan
ikinci güçlük ise ölçüm problemidir. Ölçüm alanında alçakgönüllülük, doğası
itibarıyla öz bildirim ölçme yöntemlerine kolayca tabi olmayan bir yapıya
sahiptir. Buna yapının değişken tanımları da eklenince alçakgönüllülüğü
ölçebilecek geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçüm aracı uzun süre geliştirilememiştir.
Alçakgönüllülüğü ölçen geçerli bir öz bildirim ölçeğini geliştirmede
karşılaşılan bir takım güçlüklerden ötürü araştırmacılar bu zor yapıyı
değerlendirebilmek üzere öz-bildirim ölçeklerine karşı alternatif ve yenilikçi
yaklaşımlar geliştirmişlerdir.
