Çeviri Eğitiminde Birinci Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Çeviri Edinçlerinin Değerlendirilmesine Yönelik Bir Durum Çalışması

Öz

Bu çalışma, birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin çeviri edinçlerini değerlendirerek akademik çeviri eğitiminin ilk aşamalarında karşılaşılan zorlukların tespit edilmesini ve buna yönelik öğretim stratejilerinin geliştirilmesini amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmamız Bingöl Üniversitesi, Mütercim ve Tercümanlık Bölümü, İngilizce Mütercim Tercümanlık Anabilim Dalının birinci sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşan 20 kişilik bir öğrenci grubuyla gerçekleştirilen nitel bir durum çalışmasıdır. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama araçları olarak demografik bilgi anketi, çeviri uygulaması ile çeviri süreci değerlendirme anketi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmamızda öğrencilerin erek metinleri, Amerikan Çevirmenler Birliği’nin (ATA) kapsamlı profesyonel çeviri değerlendirme modelinden esinlenerek geliştir ilen dil kullanımı hataları, anlam aktarımı hataları ile kültürel ve işlevsel düzeyde hatalar olmak üzere üç ana kategoriye dayalı bir değerlendirme modeli çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir. Betimsel analiz sonucunda tespit edilen hataların %48’inin dil kullanımı, %26’sının anlam aktarımı ve %17’sinin de kültürel ve işlevsel düzeyde olduğu belirlenmiştir. Dil kullanımında sözdizimi, anlam aktarımında kavram aktarımı, kültürel düzeyde ise kültürel öğelerin aktarımı en sorunlu alanlar olarak saptanmıştır. Bulgular, akademik çeviri eğitimi alan birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin çeviri edinçlerini geliştirmek için teori ve uygulama bileşenlerinin dengeli biçimde ele alınması gerektiğini, özellikle sözdizimi, terminoloji yönetimi ve kültürel aktarım konularına ağırlık verilmesinin önemini ortaya koymuştur. Çalışmamız ayrıca, öğrencilerin öz değerlendirmeleri ile performansları arasındaki tutarsızlıklar nedeniyle çeviri eğitiminde eleştirel düşünme ve öz değerlendirme becerilerinin geliştirilmesinin önemini göstermektedir.

A Case Study on the Evaluation of Translation Competence of First-Year Students in Translation Education

Öz

This study evaluates first-year students’ translation competence, identifies early-stage challenges in academic translation education, and proposes corresponding teaching strategies. This qualitative case study was conducted with 20 first-year students in the Department of Translation and Interpreting, English Translation and Interpreting Program at Bingöl University. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. A demographic information questionnaire, translation exercise, and translation process evaluation questionnaire were employed as data collection tools. Students’ target texts were assessed using a model we developed –based on the American Translators Association’s (ATA) professional evaluation framework—categorising errors as language-use, semantic, and cultural /functional. As a result of the descriptive analysis, it was determined that 48% of the errors were in syntactic, 26% in semantic, and 17% at cultural /functional levels. Syntax, conceptual transfer, and the transfer of cultural elements emerged as the most problematic areas. Findings indicate that theory and practice should be balanced to develop the translation competence of first-year students, emphasizing the importance of focusing on syntax, terminology management, and cultural transfer. Our study demonstrates the need to develop critical thinking and self-assessment skills in translation studies education, due to discrepancies between students’ self-assessments and actual performance.
