On Names of Rain in Turkish

Öz

This study aims to determine the reflection of rain types -a meteorological process which take different shapes on the basis of the properties of the raindrop, time periods of the rainfall, speed, volume and the amount of rain- in Turkish and it seeks to classify the features triggering different naming for rain. The effect of natural events, or in more general terms the geography, on language cannot be ignored. As a result, it is possible to encounter different names for “rain” -which is a word for the water vapor in the air which falls back to earth in the liquid form- in terms of its features. Although standard variants of languages have certain number of names for rain, we encounter a larger body of vocabulary for rain in the dialects. Türk Dil Kurumu’s Güncel Türkçe Sözlük (Dictionary of Contempoarary Turkish) and Türk Dil Kurumu Derleme Sözlüğü (Dictionary of Turkish Dialects) have been benefited for this study. More than 180 words related to rain have been found, and these words were classified according to their meanings. The origin and linguistic structures of these words have also been sought to explain in the present study.
