In our research, the University of Waterloo, known as a prestigious engineering university with global recognition, is evaluated from various aspects. The experiences and insights gained from our field visits to the University of Waterloo over different periods are shared with the aim of serving as an example for universities in Türkiye. Additionally, the research is expanded through comprehensive literature review and interviews, providing an in-depth analysis for universities in Türkiye, along with examples of the university's unique characteristics. Particularly in recent years, the research university approach in Türkiye has gained prominence. When evaluating the disadvantages in global rankings for universities that lack a medical school, the University of Waterloo analysis becomes an important example. Established in 1957 with 74 engineering students, the University of Waterloo has grown into a major engineering institution with Nobel laureates, a developed infrastructure for numerous innovation initiatives, and nearly 253,000 alumni from 156 different countries, with over 42,000 active students today. In our field studies and institutional reviews, the University of Waterloo’s various active sustainability offices, psychological support services for top engineering students, social events, departments dedicated to robotics and artificial intelligence, effective use of campus boards, and the presence of business card boards in each department as an indicator of public-private sector cooperation are among the new and unique approaches shared with university researchers. In the extensive comparisons conducted, discussions were held with institutional officials in different roles, and based on their experiences and opinions, the differences on campus were evaluated. These evaluations, carried out step by step through field visits and phased interviews, have provided valuable insights. Waterloo University places great emphasis on student entrepreneurship and innovation, and success offices have been established. In order to enhance institutional affiliation, a section akin to a souvenir or corporate memorabilia store has been developed. Furthermore, throughout the study, a productive brainstorming session will be conducted on what Turkish higher education institutions can do differently. Due to Türkiye’s rapidly aging population, it must transform its young human resources quickly. This can be achieved by examining countries like Canada, which implement effective higher education policies, and analyzing higher education institutions in China, which have recently made significant progress. Those responsible for higher education policies should focus on research that uncovers the transformation and secrets of good examples around the world, and policies in this direction should be urgently developed. Our study is expected to provide significant reference and comparative information for our universities.
