Investigation of Morphotectonic Features in Drainage Basins by Geomorphic Analysis: The Example of Delibekirli (Hatay/Kırıkhan) Basin

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to explain the morphotectonic features of the Delibekirli Basin, located in the south of Anatolia, in the middle part of the Amanos Mountains (Middle Amanos), with geomorphic indices. The Delibekirli Basin and its surroundings are tectonically located at the point where the Dead Sea Fault, Karasu Fault and Cyprus-Antakya Transform Fault meet. The average slope value of the basin is 20.1°; the highest point is Daz Hill (1795 m) located in Amanoslar. The average temperature value of the basin is 21.1 °C; annual precipitation is 579 mm; the annual average wind speed is 1.5 m/s. Within the purpose of the study, the SL (Stream Length-Length Gradient Index) index developed to reveal both the eroding power of the stream and the carrying capacity of the eroded materials; Hc (Hypsometric Curve) and Hi (Hypsometric Integral), which are used to determine and interpret the geomorphological development stages of the field; Vf (Valley Floor Length-Height Ratio) index to understand whether the area is morphologically approaching the youth stage; Smf (Dağönü Sinusity) index, which is used to reveal the relationship between landforms and faults numerically; Lineament analysis to determine the structural element deformations of the field and to understand the tectonic structure; T (Topographic Symmetry) and Af (Asymmetry Factor) were applied to understand the intensity and direction of active tectonic deformation. The study area, which consists of different lithological rocks, continues its geomorphological development under the influence of tectonic movements, climate, karstification and stream erosion. Lineaments in the basin are controlled by the tectonic structure. It is understood that while tectonic processes continue their activities actively and uplift the field, on the other hand, fluvial processes continue their activities and are affected by tectonic activity. It was concluded that in the rising area, the rivers excavated their beds deeply, the area was tectonically distorted and the main stream branch was tilted to the left according to the flow direction. Again, stream offsets and lineaments indicate the emplacement of left lateral oblique faults.
