The Effects of Structural Features on Applied Geomorphology in Between Edirne - Lalapaşa (Turkey)
Abstract
The study area is located in the Thrace peninsula, in northwest of Turkey, between the district of Edirne city center with Lalapaşa (North 41° 39' - 41° 52' East and 26° 33'-26° 46').Both lithological properties and tectonic activity played a leading role in acquiring the characteristic monoclinal structure of the study area.In this study, it was aimed to determined geomorphological characteristics of monoclinal structure between Edirne and Lalapaşa and to evaluate these properties in terms of applied geomorphology.
For surface and hydrological analyses, a database was created using 1/25.000 scale topography map, 1 / 100.000 scale geology map and analyses were performed depend on the created database using ArcGIS 10.2 software. In field studies, layer slopes, slope angles and layer directions characteristics of the layers were measured using “Brunton Type Geologist Compass”. Location determination as UTM coordinate was carried out with Garmin Etrex 10 Handheld GPS. Remote sensing data was generated and mapped using current satellite imagery to determine land use-land cover characteristics. These maps were verified and detailed by field studies.
As a result; it has been understood that structural geomorphology shaped according to structural characteristics of the study area and these characteristics affect the distribution of the transportation lines, the agricultural activities, the spatial distribution of the settlements, the characteristics of the ground and surface water resources, thus the access and use possibilities of these resources. Landuse-Landcover features were formed through structural geomorphology and associated hydrographical characteristics and these characteristics orientated and controlled applied geomorphology features.
