Narrative Structure and Form Analysis of The Movie “Life” In the Context of Neoformalist Approach in Cinema

Abstract

The neoformalist approach was developed by David Bordwell and his wife Kristin Thompson in the early 1980s; the relationship and distinction between form and narrative, plot and story; the cinematographic elements that make up the film and what kind of functions they undertake to build the narrative of the film; It is a film analysis method that focuses on how cinematographic tools are used and what kind of motifs they create. There is a relationship system that supports each other between the narrative of the film and the form of the film. The principles of form in the film can be listed as function, similarity and repetition, difference and variation, development and harmony/dissonance. According to the neoformalist approach, the meanings created in the film can be divided into two general categories: explicit meanings and implicit meanings. Moreover, the meanings produced in films can be listed in more detail as referential meaning, explicit meaning, implicit meaning and symptomatic meaning. On the other hand, four different types of motivation can be mentioned in movies. These are compositional motivation, realistic motivation, intertextual motivation and artistic motivation. While traditional film analysis methods prioritize narrative and conveyed meaning, the neoformalist approach focuses on the integral relationship between narrative and form. In this context, this article primarily discusses what the neoformalist approach is, film narrative and film form principles, meaning and motivation types; Then, Zeki Demirkubuz's movie 'Hayat', which was released in December 2023, was analyzed in the context of neoformalist approach. In this regard, the narrative structure of the film, its compliance with the principles that form the film form, the types of meanings and motivations produced at different layers in the film are revealed.
