Health tourism is one of the rapidly growing sector within the tourism industry, attracting attention from many countries due to its economic and social benefits. Conceptually, health tourism refers to individuals traveling abroad on a planned and voluntary basis to receive treatment, rehabilitation, preventive health, and wellness services. This study aims to reveal the development trends, main focus areas, and collaboration networks of research conducted in the field of health tourism. The dataset used in this study consists of 886 publications indexed in the Scopus database between 1979 and 2025, retrieved using the keywords “medical tourism” and “marketing strategy.” The data were analyzed through bibliometric analysis, and the VOSviewer software was employed for mapping and visualization. The analysis revealed that studies on health tourism and marketing strategies have increased rapidly, particularly after 2015. The most influential institutions contributing to the field are Rosen College of Hospitality Management, University of Oxford Medical Sciences, and Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave. The most frequently cited studies focus on themes such as destination management, ethical dimensions, and customer satisfaction. At the country level, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, India, Türkiye, and Australia were identified as the most influential countries in terms of citation and publication impact. The findings indicate that the health tourism literature is evolving along the axes of digitalization, AI-supported marketing, and sustainability. In this context, the study provides a comprehensive overview of research trends in health tourism and identifies thematic gaps and potential collaboration areas that may guide future research.
