The Impact of the Background Traffc on the IP-Based Phone Systems Sound Quality in the Campus Network

Öz

Data transmission and IP telephony-based sound transmission are carried out via same network
infrastructure in campus networks. In general, there are two types of traffcs in network environment. The frst
one is the normal stream traffc which refers to data and sound. The second one is the background traffc which is
considered as undesirable traffc and adversely affects IP-based sound packets. This adverse effect leads to delays
and fluctuations and fnally ends up with packet losses. This study investigates sound scrambling factors which
result from network confgurations and torrents. We carried sound packet over VLAN (Virtual network) defned in
network devices. In this way, we enabled to transmit sound with more quality and without interruption in campus
network. While Iperf tool was used for point-to-point tests, OPNET simulation software was used to evaluate
VLAN performance. Tests conducted in multiple units of the campus indicate that fluctuations in sound packets
remained between the range of 0-150 ms; sound packet delays remained between the range of 0-20 ms

Kampüs Ağlarında Arkaplan Trafğin IP-Tabanlı Telefon Sistemlerin Ses Kalitesi Üzerindeki Etkisi

Öz

Kampüs ağlarında veri ve IP-telefon tabanlı ses iletimi genellikle aynı ağ altyapısı üzerinde
gerçekleştirilmektedir. Ağ ortamında genel anlamda iki farklı trafk ile karşılaşılır. Bunlardan birincisi data ve sesi
ifade eden normal akış trafğidir. İkincisi ise istenmeyen trafk olarak kabul edilen ve IP-tabanlı ses paketlerini
olumsuz etkileyen arkaplan trafğidir. Bu da ister istemez gecikmelere, dalgalanmalara neden olmakta ve nihayetinde
paket kayıpları ile sonuçlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, ağ konfgürasyonlarından ve torrentlerden kaynaklanan ses
bozucu etkenleri incelendi. Ağ cihazlarında tanımlanan VLAN (Sanal ağ) üzerinde ses paketleri taşındı. Böylece
sesin kampüs ağında kesintisiz ve daha kaliteli olarak iletilmesi sağlandı. Burada Iperf aracı noktadan noktaya
testler için kullanılırken, OPNET simülasyon yazılımı VLAN performansını değerlendirmek için kullanıldı.
Kampüsün birden fazla biriminde yapılan testler; ses paketlerine ait dalgalanmaların 0-150 ms aralığında ve ses
paketi gecikmelerinin ise 0-20 ms aralığında kaldığını göstermektedir
