This study aims to determine the hot gas desulfurization performance of five different metal oxides (CuO, ZnO, PbO, CaO ve MnO) whose sulfur hold up activity at low temperature are known. High sulfur lignites are used as energy resources in Turkey and liginite utilization is limited due to the environmental problems caused by the high sulfur content. In order to overcome this problem, metal oxide based materials are used as sulfur adsorbents after hot gas is cooled. Addition to combustion, gasification which is the well–known clean coal process allows the synthetic petroleum by the production of synthesis gas (CO and H2). However, fuel poduction from syngas is an endothermic process and cooling results in the energy lost. Therefore, hot gas desulfurization prosess gains importance both to increase the energy efficiency and to solve the sulfur dependent environmental challenge.
