Tezsiz Yüksek Lisans Öğrencilerinin Karşılaştıkları Güçlükler ve Başa Çıkma Stratejileri: Nitel Bir Araştırma

Öz

Bu araştırma, tezsiz yüksek lisans programlarında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin eğitim süreçlerine katılım motivasyonlarını, karşılaştıkları akademik, kurumsal ve sosyal güçlükleri ve bu güçlüklerle başa çıkma stratejilerini nitel bir bakış açısıyla incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Literatürde tezsiz yüksek lisans öğrencilerinin deneyimlerini merkeze alan nitel çalışmaların sınırlı olması, bu araştırmanın alana özgün bir katkı sunmasını sağlamaktadır. Araştırma, fenomenolojik yaklaşım çerçevesinde yürütülmüş; amaçlı örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen 25 tezsiz yüksek lisans öğrencisiyle yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler tematik analiz yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular, öğrencilerin tezsiz yüksek lisans programlarına katılım motivasyonlarının kariyer gelişimi, mesleki yeterlik kazanımı, akademik unvan elde etme ve kişisel gelişim gibi çok boyutlu hedefler etrafında şekillendiğini göstermektedir. Bununla birlikte öğrencilerin akademik danışmanlık yetersizliği, yoğun ders yükü, iş–aile–öğrenim dengesini kurmada yaşanan güçlükler, sınırlı sosyal destek ve kurumsal bürokratik süreçler gibi çeşitli engellerle karşılaştıkları belirlenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları, öğrencilerin bu güçlüklerle başa çıkmak için sabır geliştirme, kariyer hedeflerine odaklanma, etkili zaman yönetimi, akademik ve sosyal destek arama gibi bireysel ve çevresel stratejiler kullandıklarını ortaya koymaktadır. Elde edilen bulgular, tezsiz yüksek lisans programlarının öğrenci profili ve ihtiyaçları doğrultusunda yeniden yapılandırılması, danışmanlık hizmetlerinin güçlendirilmesi ve program kalitesinin artırılmasına yönelik düzenlemelere ihtiyaç olduğunu göstermektedir.

Challenges Faced by Non-Thesis Master’s Students and Their Coping Strategies: A Qualitative Study

Öz

This study aims to examine, from a qualitative perspective, the motivations of students enrolled in non-thesis master’s programs to participate in their educational processes, the academic, institutional, and social challenges they encounter, and the strategies they develop to cope with these challenges. The limited number of qualitative studies in the literature that focus specifically on the experiences of non-thesis master’s students constitutes a significant research gap, which this study seeks to address. The research was conducted within the framework of a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 25 non-thesis master’s students selected through purposive sampling. The data obtained were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that students’ motivations for enrolling in non-thesis master’s programs are shaped around multidimensional goals such as career development, acquisition of professional competencies, attainment of academic credentials, and personal development. However, students also face various challenges, including inadequate academic advising, heavy course workloads, difficulties in balancing work, family, and education, limited social support, and institutional bureaucratic processes. The results further reveal that students employ both individual and environmental coping strategies, such as developing patience, focusing on career goals, effective time management, and seeking academic and social support. Overall, the findings suggest a need to restructure non-thesis master’s programs in line with student profiles and needs, strengthen academic advising services, and implement regulations aimed at improving program quality.
