Content Analysis of Visitor Reviews on the Tripadvisor Platform: The Case of Tarsus

Öz

Tripadvisor, as one of the rapidly developing communication tools, is a platform where individuals can freely share their touristic experiences. Within the scope of this study, content analysis was applied to the reviews made about the touristic products in the Tarsus region. As a result of the analysis of Tripadvisor reviews regarding the touristic products in Tarsus, it was observed that the majority of visitors had positive experiences and recommended visiting these touristic sites. Among the most emphasized positive opinions are the historical and cultural values of the region. Visitors also shared favorable comments about the natural beauty, must-see places, and recreational activities. In addition, restoration efforts in areas attributed with sanctity and historical importance—such as Saint Paul's Well, the Cave of Seven Sleepers (Eshab-ı Kehf), and the Tomb of Prophet Daniel—were highlighted positively by visitors. However, negative opinions included issues such as lack of space, poor maintenance, mismatch between expectations and actual experiences, and deficiencies in service performance. Transportation problems and high entrance fees were also frequently mentioned by visitors. Moreover, the lack of reviews from foreign tourists suggests that Tarsus is not being adequately promoted on an international level. In this regard, enhancing promotional activities is considered important to increase the region’s tourism potential. In conclusion, it has been determined that the touristic products in Tarsus are generally appreciated by visitors, yet certain deficiencies need to be addressed. Resolving these shortcomings is expected to contribute to the development of the district's tourism potential.
