The Worldviews of Theology Students in Higher Education

In the 21st century, concepts such as postmodernism, globalisation, pluralism and individualism have come to the fore and the worldviews formed by these concepts have deeply affected the religious lives of the youth. While dealing with the uncertainties of the world, many young people have turned life into an individual project and a matter of personal choice in search of meaning according to their own eclectic tastes and needs, and have turned to questioning and exploring their beliefs from a range of religious traditions and spiritual practices. In this context, the study will examine the attitudes of a group of theology students towards religion and social changes in the context of religious education, their worldviews, the religious dimension of the reality they live in, and their attitudes and thoughts towards Islam as a religious-based value system that shapes their identities. Worldviews should be critically evaluated in the strategy of religious education. For this purpose, it is envisaged to conduct a study that examines the worldviews of theology students in order to discover themselves in their religious and cultural environments and to develop a critical approach and a new understanding. The data of the study were collected through a questionnaire survey conducted with 254 students of the Faculty of Theology in the sample of Şırnak University. The findings revealed that worldviews are not fixed or unchanging, but rather fluid, temporal and constantly evolving. Furthermore, a typology of worldviews was created by analysing the place and role of worldviews in the lives of young people in higher education. It is thought that the research will contribute to researchers, teachers, counsellors, educators, as well as policy makers, educational authorities and curriculum developers.
