Instructional Confidence and Technology Attitudes in a Centralized Education System: Evidence from Türkiye

Öz

Educational Technology Integration has been shaped by the beliefs of teachers; however, the majority of evidence connecting self-efficacy in teaching with technology attitudes is based on data collected from western, high-autonomy systems. In order to investigate whether the widely documented positive relationship exists within an examination-driven and centralized educational system, this study examined the relationship between technology attitudes and general teaching self-efficacy in Turkey. Using a cross-sectional survey design, a total of 386 urban public school teachers in Balıkesir Province were recruited through convenience sampling. Correlation analyses utilizing Pearson correlation coefficients and t-test statistics were performed to analyze the data. The results revealed a very small and statistically non-significant relationship between general teaching self-efficacy and technology attitudes (r = .06, p = .231, r² = .004), and no statistically significant gender differences were found in either construct. The findings indicate that general instructional confidence and technology-related dispositions may function somewhat separately in highly structured educational environments, rather than suggesting that this weak association can be attributed solely to the structural aspects of a centralized system. Additionally, limited variability in both constructs — due to ceiling effects — and the conceptual difference between efficacy in general domains and attitudes toward specific domains likely contributed to the weak association.
