The Relationship Between Inflation and Income Inequality in Developed and Developing Countries: Panel Causality Approach

In this study, the relationship between inflation and income inequality is examined using panel data from 23 developed countries and 11 developing countries spanning from 1990 to 2020. The Gini coefficient is used as the indicator of income inequality, and the change in the Consumer Price Index is used as the measure of inflation. The Bootstrap Panel Causality test developed by Kónya (2006) is employed to investigate the causality relationship between inflation and income inequality in both developed and developing countries. The results obtained from Kónya's (2006) causality analysis provide evidence of causality from inflation to income inequality in two countries (Finland, France) among developed countries, while there is evidence suggesting no causality relationship from income inequality to inflation, especially in developed countries. In the group of developing countries, causality from inflation to income inequality is observed in three countries (China, Paraguay, Mexico), and causality from income inequality to inflation is observed in two countries (Peru, Thailand). Therefore, the causality relationship between the variables is unidirectional in developed countries and bidirectional in developing countries. The main findings of the study demonstrate that the direction or cause-and-effect relationship between income inequality and inflation can vary across countries with different levels of development.
